I have to admit that I’m struggling with Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom (again, on my Acton reading list). I understand the principle and importance of personal freedom/liberty and its role in staving off totalitarian governments. The part I am conflicted about is the seeming lack of compassion for those in our society who are unable to compete in Hayek’s ideal world. Our current economic environment provides a painful example of what happens when personal liberty goes unchecked. Individuals had the economic freedom to create derivatives and abused that freedom to the detriment of society. I am only 1/3 through so maybe my perspective will change.

A clip from Daniel Coyle author of The Talent Code (on my reading list). I’m not finished with the book, but the principles/science seem to make sense and reinforce the idea that discipline and the willingness to fail and learn from failure have rung true in my life up until now…lord knows I’ve got the fail thing down pretty well, time will tell if I’ve learned anything.

Apparently, the design gods are getting tired of me proclaiming the virtue of design thinking without any real street cred. Well, this week I began working with some folks at Acton MBA (actonmba.org) here in Austin. Part of my background research includes a bit of ‘lite’ reading (HA). It is a bit of put up or shut up on the whole design thinking thing. Over the next few months I’m going to focus my posts on my critical analysis of these readings, how they shape my thinking on my own personal philosophies and the work I’m doing for them…don’t worry they gave me the okay to do so.
